EmotivPRO vs EPOC X PRO: Software and Headset Explained

Imagine a researcher sitting with a new Emotiv headset on their desk and software open on screen, facing two similar names: EmotivPRO and EPOC X PRO. While EmotivPRO is the software application used to view, record, annotate, and analyze EEG data, EPOC X PRO is the physical hardware headset that measures those signals.
This article explains how they differ, how they seamlessly work together, what each costs, and how to get started.
What Is EmotivPRO?
EmotivPRO is the Emotiv's EEG software where a study happens on screen: you watch the signal come in, mark the moments that matter, record the session and take the data wherever it needs to go next.
Researchers use it in a few common ways:
Run a stimulus-driven study: Build and deploy an experiment, then add event markers as stimuli appear, so each response in the recording ties back to what the participant saw or heard. This suits ERP studies and neuromarketing experiments.
Line EEG up with other equipment: On higher plans, stream data through Lab Streaming Layer to tools such as MATLAB, PsychoPy and EEGLAB, so EEG stays synchronized with stimulus presentation, behavioral tracking, motion capture or VR.
Work as a team: Teams with two or more license seats can view all recordings and annotations in one shared dashboard.
Review and ask questions: Review sessions in the EEG viewer and, on paid plans, ask EmotivIQ to summarize a recording or explore patterns in your data.
EmotivPRO runs on PC and macOS, with tablet and mobile versions, and saves recordings locally or to Emotiv Cloud.
What Is EPOC X PRO?
EPOC X PRO is our newest 16-channel dry-sensor wireless EEG headset, built for studies that run long, run often or run outside a single lab. Here is where its design helps:
Many participants, many operators: Its default dry sensors mean there is no saline to prepare, and an indicator light in each sensor housing shows contact quality, which helps different people fit the headset consistently.
Sensors matched to each participant: Interchangeable flat and comb sensors clip into any socket, so you can use comb sensors where there is hair and flat sensors where there is not. The sockets also accept standard saline felt pads for users who prefer traditional saline conduction or have specific comfort and signal needs.
Long sessions and field work: The headset can record more than 8 hours at 256 Hz on board, without a connected computer, and Wi-Fi 6 is designed to hold up better in busy wireless environments.
Timing-sensitive research: Timestamps sync to within about 1 millisecond, which makes it easier to align EEG with eye tracking or behavioral logs.
Parietal and visual studies: Its 16 sites include P3 and P4, which suits SSVEP and VEP paradigms and attention and working memory research.
What Is the Difference Between EmotivPRO and EPOC X PRO?
EmotivPRO is the software you run, and EPOC X PRO is the headset you wear. The names look alike because the two are built to work together.
EmotivPRO | EPOC X PRO | |
|---|---|---|
What it is | Software | A headset (hardware) |
What it does | Records, annotates, analyzes and streams EEG data | Measures EEG at 16 sites and sends it over Bluetooth 6 or Wi-Fi 6 |
Where you use it | PC and macOS, with tablet and mobile versions | On your head |
Data features | Event markers, local or cloud storage, EmotivIQ on paid plans, Lab Streaming Layer streaming on higher plans | Active amplification at every sensor, 24-bit acquisition, on-board recording for more than 8 hours at 256 Hz |
How you get it | EmotivPRO Lite is included with every Emotiv headset, with paid plans for more features | Currently in pre-order as a bundle with a free one-year EmotivPRO Standard license |
Works with | Emotiv headsets, plus MATLAB, PsychoPy and EEGLAB through Lab Streaming Layer | EmotivPRO and the Cortex API and SDK |
How Do EmotivPRO and EPOC X PRO Work Together?
EPOC X PRO measures the EEG, and EmotivPRO is where you record, review and analyze it. The headset sends data to your computer over Bluetooth 6 or Wi-Fi 6, and EmotivPRO takes it from there:
Record and review: EmotivPRO shows the signal in its EEG viewer, records it, and saves it locally or to Emotiv Cloud.
Mark events: You add event markers in EmotivPRO, and EPOC X PRO timestamps sync to within about 1 millisecond, which makes it easier to align EEG with eye tracking or behavioral logs.
Stream to other tools: With an EmotivPRO Standard Team license or higher, EmotivPRO streams data through Lab Streaming Layer to MATLAB, PsychoPy and EEGLAB.
Analyze: On paid plans, EmotivIQ works like a chatbot inside EmotivPRO. A full day of participants leaves hours of EEG to review, so ask it to summarize a session, explore patterns in your data or surface what to look at first. If you are new to EEG analysis, it gives you a place to start by asking questions in plain language, and you can still take the data into your own tools.
Keep recording: If the wireless connection drops, EPOC X PRO keeps recording on board.
Do I Need EmotivPRO to Use EPOC X PRO?
Not for every use, but EmotivPRO Lite is included with every Emotiv headset, so most people start with it. EPOC X PRO can also record more than 8 hours at 256 Hz on board without a connected computer, and developers can build their own applications with the Cortex API and SDK.
A paid license adds the features most research needs. Raw EEG recording and export are available with an EmotivPRO Standard license, and EmotivIQ is available on paid plans only and not on EmotivPRO Lite.
Can I Use EmotivPRO With Other Headsets?
Yes. EmotivPRO also works with Emotiv's Epoc X, Insight and Flex 2 headsets, and every Emotiv headset includes EmotivPRO Lite. Because EPOC X PRO and Epoc X share the same EmotivPRO and Cortex software, you can run both headsets in one workflow.
How Much Does It Cost to Use EmotivPRO With EPOC X PRO?
EPOC X PRO is currently in pre-order as the EPOC X PRO Bundle, which includes the headset and a free one-year EmotivPRO Standard license for \$10,000 USD, with a price of \$15,000 USD to follow. EmotivPRO Lite is free and included with every Emotiv headset, and paid EmotivPRO plans start at \$1,068 a year, billed annually.
EmotivPRO Lite: Free, and included with every Emotiv headset.
EmotivPRO Standard: \$1,068 a year, billed annually. Adds unlimited recordings, experiment building, recording, storing and exporting data, and analysis of post-processed data.
EmotivPRO Standard Team: \$2,689 a year, billed annually. Adds Lab Streaming Layer streaming and organizational data sharing, and covers up to five computers.
EmotivPRO Performance: Contact Emotiv sales. Built for advanced users who need high-resolution recordings and integrations.
How Do I Get Started With EmotivPRO and EPOC X PRO?
Get EPOC X PRO, fit it, connect it and open EmotivPRO, with a free one-year EmotivPRO Standard license included in the bundle. Here are the steps in order:
Get the headset. EPOC X PRO is currently in pre-order as the EPOC X PRO Bundle, which includes a free one-year EmotivPRO Standard license.
Choose your sensors. Dry flat and comb sensors clip into any socket, and standard saline pads fit the same sockets.
Fit the headset. Check contact quality on the indicator light in each sensor housing.
