Securing Your Neural Data
Built to meet rigorous institutional standards, our privacy framework ensures your EEG recordings and metadata remain secure, compliant, and strictly controlled at every stage.
Emotiv licenses trained models. We do not sell EEG recordings or raw neural data. Research arrangements involving raw-data sharing require separate, study-specific consent to a named research protocol.
Your recordings use a coded identifier.
Your Emotiv account contains your account information. EEG recordings and session metadata are referenced using OwnerID, a coded identifier that separates those records from directly identifying account information.
Pseudonymized does not mean anonymous.
Pseudonymized data remains personal data under GDPR. Applicable rights include access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection.
We restrict re-identification.
Emotiv’s policy prohibits linking pseudonymized data back to individual users for operational, commercial, or profiling purposes. Limited exceptions cover controlled testing of privacy safeguards and valid legal process.
Safeguards extend to research partners.
Partners receiving data under explicit consent are contractually bound to security and non-reidentification requirements. Further uses must be covered by the appropriate consent process.
Retention and deletion must be clear.
Emotiv retains your data until you request its deletion. You can request deletion at any time from any Emotiv app, or by contacting Customer Support.

Understand how AI is used in EmotivIQ
Emotiv’s AI-supported metrics, reports, and detections use machine learning to interpret signals captured by Emotiv headsets.
This includes cognitive and emotion-state estimates, facial expression signals, mental command detection, EmotivIQ Reports, EmotivIQ’s chat feature, and Brain Coach.
These outputs are statistical estimates derived from signal patterns. They can be affected by signal quality, sensor placement, movement, sleep, and individual differences.
Where EmotivIQ is enabled, future models may support retrospective analysis of recordings already stored in Cloud, within the applicable disclosed purposes and consent.
Emotiv products are intended for research and personal use. They are not sold as medical devices under MDR 2017/745 and are not intended to diagnose or treat disease.
