If you’re ready to start developing with EMOTIV’s Cortex SDK, one of your first steps is registering your App ID. Whether you’re working with consumer devices like the Insight or MN8, or exploring options with professional-grade hardware such as the EPOC X or EPOC Flex, this guide will walk you through how to get started with consumer devices.

Understanding Cortex API Access Levels

EMOTIV’s Cortex SDK supports multiple EEG and behavioral data streams. These are grouped into Basic (BCI API) and Premium categories:

Basic (BCI API) Includes:

• Mental Commands API

• Facial Expression API

• Frequency Band API

• Motion Data API

• Low-resolution Performance Metrics (0.1 Hz)

Premium API Includes:

• Raw EEG API

• High-resolution Performance Metrics (2 Hz)

For Insight & MN8 Users, and anyone accessing BCI API only

If you’re using Insight, MN8, Cortex SDK to all data streams is available at no additional cost. Here’s how to register your app ID:

1. Log In: Go to the Cortex App Registration page and sign in using your EmotivID.

2. Register a New App: Click on the “Register New” button to create a new application.

3. Enter App Details: Provide your App Name and a unique App ID. Choose something memorable that reflects your project.

4. Device Type Note: If you’re developing with Consumer devices (MN8 or Insight), or need access to BCI API for your development (regardless of the device type), please do not select the “Enable EEG for Professional devices” option.

5. Save Your Client Secret: After registering, a Client Secret will be displayed. Copy and store it securely—you’ll need it for authentication during development.

6. Confirm & Close: Click “Confirm and Close” to finish the process.

For Epoc X & Flex Users

If you’re developing with EPOC+, EPOC X, or Flex, you have the option to access both BCI API and Premium API data streams. Here’s what to do:

1. Log In: Go to the Cortex App Registration page and sign in using your EmotivID.

2. Register a New App: Click on the “Register New” button to create a new application.

3. Enter App Details: Provide your App Name and a unique App ID. Choose something memorable that reflects your project.

4. Device Type Note

• If you only need BCI API access, do not select the “Enable EEG for Professional devices” option.

• If you need Premium API access (e.g., raw EEG or high-resolution performance metrics), please contact our Support team before registering to ensure the appropriate license is associated and valid with your account.

5. Save Your Client Secret: After registering, a Client Secret will be displayed. Copy and store it securely—you’ll need it for authentication during development.

6. Confirm & Close: Click “Confirm and Close” to finish the process.
