Can I measure Event-related Potential (ERP) components such as P300 with EMOTIV headsets?

Introduction

Peer-reviewed research has demonstrated that Emotiv EPOC [1] and FLEX[2] can reliably measure ERP components such as P300 response. Please note that EPOC Flex allows more flexible placement of sensors including the central line, which is desirable for ERP studies.

In order to elicit P300 response experiments should be carefully designed with repetitive stimuli for this purpose. 

How to measure P300 with EMOTIV headsets

To successfully measure the P300 response we recommend following steps

1. Design and build experimental paradigm that will elicit a P300 response: we recommend referring to published research papers. 
2. Set up markers for stimuli: Event marking accuracy is key for obtaining P300 responses. You can use any of the below options to add event markers to the EEG recording. 
1. Use one of the MARKER modes available in EmotivPRO (e.g., serial port marker, USB marking etc) to accurately mark the onset of each stimulus in your experiment. 
2. Use Emotiv marking components with PsychoPy. These markers allow precise synchronization of EEG data with the presented stimuli, enabling the detection of the P300 response.
3. Use Lab Streaming Layer(LSL) integrated with MATLAB/Python to add synchronized markers to the EEG recording
3. Record EEG data with event markers: EmotivPRO allows real-time recording of raw EEG, performance metrics, FFT, and motion data. Use EmotivPRO’s built-in capabilities to acquire participant data. 
4. Export data for analysis:
   Once data is collected, export the recordings in CSV or EDF formats. Use third-party tools such as  EEGLAB, MNE Python or other analysis platforms to process and analyze the data.
