EMOTIV EPOC Flex (Saline and Gel) has been validated to capture quality Event-related Potential (ERP) data for research. The validation was performed by Macquarie University, Australia. The university is in the top two percent in the world and within the top 10 in Australia.

ERP helps capture neural activity related to both sensory and cognitive processes. It is any stereotyped electrophysiological response to a specific sensory, cognitive, or motor event. ERP provides a safe and noninvasive means of evaluating brain functioning.

The aim of the study was to test the validity of a portable EEG system as a consumer-grade ERP research tool. Dr. Nik Williams and Dr. Nic Badcock, School of Cognitive Science, Macquarie University compared Emotiv EPOC Flex Saline co-located with Neuroscan ScanAmpsTM clinical EEG system and showed equivalence for Auditory and Visual ERPs using Emotiv EXTENDER to provide hardware trigger events. The analysis demonstrated that such a portable EEG system as EMOTIV EPOC Flex can quantify Auditory ERP and Visual ERP waveforms, hence, provide high-quality EEG data for contextual research.
