How to Become a Change Maker and Inspire Others

WANTED: People who are passionate about Making a Difference and creating lasting change.

At this point in time, we are facing huge issues globally—slowing economic growth, rapid climate change, and significant increases in population, to name a few. Everyone has the ability to address these issues in some way and change the course of history.

Throughout time, there have been many individuals who have created change in significant ways.
17-year-old Brittany Trilford from New Zealand is an inspiring example of someone influencing global change. Brittany gave a 5-minute address to 130 heads of state at the RIO+20 Earth Summit. She felt honored to take up her obligation to stand up, be counted as one of her generations, and strengthen the voice of youth at RIO+20.

The starting point to any change process is you! By looking beyond ourselves to the needs of others, each and every one of us has the potential to impact amazing outcomes through a “ripple effect”— impacting the people around you, in your community, across a country and globally. For example, if you shared this article with twenty people and encouraged each of those twenty people to share with six others, who then share with six other people, consider the number of people this article could impact!

This article highlights key aspects for you to consider by looking at how you can create change and become a role model to others. You have the opportunity to be a part of a global change process that could change the course of history and serve us for generations to come.

“One person can make a difference and every person should try”
J.F. Kennedy, US President, 1961 – 63

How would you like to change your life?

Discovering what your life is about is an opportunity for you to know who and what you are meant to become, which is the first step to leading the change on a bigger scale. For some, changing their destiny is about seeking happiness: this could be material possessions, spiritual enlightenment, or being a service to humanity. Often, changing your destiny comes down to knowing what is important to you and what drives you.

So, find some quiet time and begin answering the big questions in your life that will assist you in finding your unique purpose. For example:

  • Who or what inspires you and what are you passionate about?
  • What makes you feel great?
  • What are you naturally good at and passionate about?
  • If you had to teach something, what would that be?
  • What greater cause could you become involved in?
  • How can you make a difference and leave a lasting legacy?

Keep your answers in a place that’s easy to access and update, like your fridge door, so it’s not out of sight: it will be a source of sustaining you and a measure of your growth throughout your life.

Your destiny should be something that gives you purpose, makes you feel useful, inspires you and gives you satisfaction. There is an excellent book by Viktor Frankl, called Man’s Search for Meaning which offers us all an avenue to greater meaning and purpose in our own lives. At the heart of his theory, known as logotherapy, is a conviction that the primary human drive is not pleasure but the pursuit of what we find meaningful. Man’s Search for Meaning became one of the most influential books in America and it continues to inspire us all to find significance in the very act of living.

Looking beyond you

Once you’ve reflected on your life, you can then go to an exciting new level by looking beyond you, to impact your immediate community, or even globally. The opportunity to connect and influence a bigger global community has increased significantly with the progress in technology and social media.

However, the key aspect in bringing about global change is having a visionary, leadership approach that projects us beyond political timeframes, creating a sustainable outcome for generations to come.

Each and everyone one of us can create an impact globally. By considering a cause that you would like to become involved in that is greater than you, will open up an exciting opportunity for you to lead, communicate, inspire and involve others across barriers of language, culture and communication.

Be a role model for change

After considering where you may like to create impact and a positive lasting change, I am sure you would all agree that creating this change doesn’t always come easy. The first start to the change process is successfully responding to change and by doing that, you can be a role model to others.

Change can create tension within us, depending on how you’re experiencing the world. Limitations in our thinking make us see the world in black and white. To see your world in true technicolor, it is important to consider:

  • How you see your future and how you act daily—by choosing your path and then your response to circumstances, you will achieve a quality of life based on your true values.
  • How you manage your feelings—when you think differently you feel different and you start working productively for better outcomes
  • How do you view and take on new challenges and if you have gratitude – are you a “glass half empty” or “glass half full” person?

By understanding how you create change, you can apply your thinking more productively to the new directions you have now discovered in your life and the amazing outcomes that will follow. You can then share these new experiences and become a role model to others.

Partner with EMOTIV to create real change

EMOTIV has turned the tables on how we use technology, allowing us to use it to our advantage and connect with ourselves. EMOTIV enables us to know ourselves better and understand the possibilities of neuroscience, not only in a research lab but also in our everyday lives.

By developing technology for personal, research, and development applications, we’ve maintained an uncompromising approach to the design and development of our wireless EEG (electroencephalography) headsets.

Neural science seeks to understand how the nervous system functions, matures, and maintains itself; neuroscience research often focuses on how the brain influences cognitive behavior and function.

EMOTIV’s EEG headsets detect six measures of mental performance derived directly from your brain activity: stress, engagement, interest, excitement, focus, and relaxation. Using this information, you then understand more about your capabilities, just like having your own virtual coach.

An EMOTIV headset paired with our well-being app becomes your own virtual coach to measure and optimize your brain power, fire up your performance, and supercharge your mental capacity and flow. Personalized neural insights can help you change your behavior, adapt to situations, and learn more about yourself.

With EMOTIV, your team can have the tools to improve their mental wellbeing and optimize their day, benefiting their lives inside and outside of work.
